Aurora Astra is a site dedicated to documenting and sharing my experiences as I pursue my pilot’s licence. I started the site in 2017, in conjunction with starting my journey towards my private pilots licence (PPL). I will be posting blogs about my thoughts, experiences, and feedback on the process. I will also be sharing some video content, reviewing products, and sharing links and other valuable web resources I find along the way.
Why did I want to create a site like this? I wanted to document my journey for my own sake, but also share it with others. I found a lot of the websites about aviation I had read over the years were written by seasoned professionals who had years of experience and offered ample valuable advice about becoming a pilot, but seemed to be detached from the experience of getting their PPL – likely since it had been years or decades since they had the experience. I am hoping to provide a more ‘raw’ or ‘green’ point of view – the student’s point of view – on getting a PPL and progressing though the challenges, tribulations, and learnings in doing so. The site, comments, thoughts, and opinions may not be as polished as other aviation sites, but perhaps it will give the next aspiring pilot a different perspective to consider things from.
Why is the site called Aurora Astra? Well Aurora in latin means “dawn” which is fitting since this site starts with the dawn of my flying journey. Astra comes from the latin word astrum, which means “star”, or in this rough context, sky or heaven; which is the destination of this journey. (Also, I thought the name sounded cool!)
Welcome to Aurora Astra!
